JOB DONE! Scotland - NC500 - Isle of Skye - HOME!🇦🇺 - Episode 💯!
We left the last episode nearly being blown off Dunnet Head. To shelter from the elements we continued west and found one of the only remaining pubs open for the season. It was just our luck we snuck in on their last night open! We grabbed a good feed before tucking the Troopy as hard up to the side of the pub as possible to escape the wind. The pub was bustling with locals, gathering for what would be the last time here for months. With daylight hours decreasing exponentially as the year ends, and blistering arctic conditions looming, the locals go more into survival mode. We had a chat to the barmaid about the life in the North who told us this was her for the year, she’ll be going into hibernation now for the winter. We slept well that night and when we woke in the morning the ocean lay still, the clouds hung motionless, and in the morning sun the entire landscape resembled an oil painting. We were cautious to accept the significant positive change in conditions though as the situation can change very quickly here. From the pub we continued around the spectacular northern coast until we arrived at Smoo Cave. This huge cave lies at the top of a narrow inlet and has been used as a refuge for local fishermen and people at sea for centuries. A short walk down into the inlet leads into an expansive cavern. Once inside a small timber bridge trails deeper into the cave, over a stream, through a narrow section, and right to the back where a huge thundering waterfall feeds from the loch above. The wind blowing off the waterfall was piercing, so after a few quick snaps we retreated to the Troopy.
Due to the season everything, like the pub, was now closed in the region though we didn’t come here for infrastructure, we came for the amazing landscape, and that there is an abundance of here in all seasons. As we continue on the narrow country roads, snaking inland through wide valleys, over rolling passes, and back to the coast, the ominous heavy clouds filter a broken sunlight, drawing out the rich lush colours of the late autumn to create an intense and dramatic backdrop. In all directions this uninhabited environment is of massive proportions, the gentle lower landscape stretching out into the distance rises steeply into huge rolling mountain ranges. Landscape on these proportions inherit s sort of dominant aura and command an almost addictive sense of scale. These humbling experiences provide a significant part of the reason we travel to places like this, ‘chasing the dragon’ so to speak. As much as the weather had created an incredible atmosphere and dramatic backdrop for photography, it hadn’t inspired a want to tackle any of the significant amount of hikes in the region. The weather was constantly in and out of showers so attempting any hiking would inevitably end in complete saturation. Without a place to dry hiking gear we would be living in a constant cold and wet state. Thankfully the scenery is so expansive that mountain top views aren’t required to take in the grandeur so we trucked on taking it all in from the comfort and warmth of the Troopy. Driving till dark (4pm) we found a small state owned camp spot at Torridon, another example of an attempt to combat the issue of campers. It was easy to see that in peak season this place was be overrun though for now it was just us and the deer. Working off a donation basis the camp is positioned next to a rural fire station and use of amenities including hot showers are shared with the station.
During our research of sights of Scotland, The Isle of Skye, frequented the top of the list. Factoring in the weather, the possible attractions were reduced and given the islands relatively ‘small’ size, we took an early start the following morning to see the highlights in one day. Heading in an anti-clockwise direction our first stop was Mealt Falls. Mealt Falls is a raging waterfall which plunges off the edge of the 55m high cliff directly into the ocean. We’ve seen many waterfalls on our journey though there’s only a handful in the world which fall as dramatically into the ocean like Mealt. The most notable is Mulafossur Waterfall, several hundred nautical miles to the north of Mealt on the Faroe Islands. We had originally wanted to visit the Faroes though due to the season we had to give it a miss, Mealt therefor was a great compromise. From Mealt the mountain range which ran along the centre of the Isle was covered in cloud; nestled in that cloud was our next destination, one of, if not the most, iconic images of the Isle - The Quiraing. As we made the drive towards the escarpment and up to the ridge as if by some Devine intervention the rains eased, clouds parted, and sun broke through.

WE MADE IT!! AUSTRALIA to LONDON by ROAD! 🇦🇺 🚐 🇬🇧 - The Way Overland - Episode 99
Переглядів 12 тис.2 роки тому
We left the last episode cruising into the fading light along the incredible balkan coastline of Croatia. Driving till dark we found a quiet camp spot away from the road down a rocky track with a great view over the inlet. A strong dry easterly was howling up the coastline and the low coarse shrub which covered the landscape provided no protection. We decided to sleep down the bottom and leave ...
COVID CHANGES PLANS! 😒 - Australia to Scotland by road - Episode 98

The whiskey did it’s job and we slept comfortably warm that night! These campgrounds with hot showers are a luxury and in these cheaper Eastern European countries they’re also somewhat affordable! Packed up and back in the muddy Troopy we hit the road again northbound for Serbia. This was a potentially problematic border crossing as due to COVID restrictions, Australia was not on the approved l...

In the last episode you would’ve seen we’d taken the easy road to Theth as the report looked less than desirable. As picturesque, smooth, and easy the road in was, it wasn’t as authentic as an experience we would’ve liked, so, as the weather didn’t appear to be arriving, we reassessed our forward schedule, accepted the risk of potentially losing a day, and decided to tackle the unsealed road ou...
The INCREDIBLE Albanian ALPS! & THETH! 🇦🇱 - Australia to Scotland by road - Episode 96

The hilltop coastal camp spot we had found at the end of the last episode provided a good mix of Albania. Communist ruins, and beautiful clear water. We woke to a perfect day with the sun glistening off the crystal waters, fisherman in small boats were casting their nets, and a herd of noisy goats scrabbled up the crest in front of us and off into the shrub. While making our morning coffee a lo...
HOT SPRINGS, 4x4, and RAKI - ALBANIA ROADTRIP 🇦🇱 -- Australia to Scotland by road - Episode 95

Albania is renowned for it’s easily accessible off-road trails (potentially not generally considered off-road trails by the locals, just roads). The weather forecast was looking patchy though and as a lot of the tracks we’d planned to take involved riverbeds we had to do some planning. From Gjirokaster the central highway cuts straight north to Tirania. We were faced with two options; we could ...
The DEEPEST GORGE in the WORLD! - ALBANIA 🇦🇱 - Australia to Scotland by road - Episode 94

From the arch bridges we wound our way further up into the mountains to the top of the plateau and Vikos Gorge. Vikos Gorge slices through the Pindus ranges with widths ranging from several metres to several kms, and depths over 1.3km. Because of the relatively narrow width the Gorge holds the record for the deepest in the world. Standing on the top of the precipice gazing out to the adjacent s...

At the end of the previous episode we arrived at our rather steep camp site in Meteora. Meteora is famous for its precariously placed monasteries perched atop some impressive rock pillars. It’s not known exactly when the monasteries were established though it’s believed to be around the 14th century as a safe haven for hermit monks. More than 20 were built, of which only six remain today and ar...

We left the last episode with a realisation that the balmy beach weather we had envisaged for our time in Greece may not be a reality. With that in mind we ducked into a town to grab SIM cards (before the 4 hour long afternoon siesta) and changed our itinerary with a more inland approach. The first inland attraction we found on our way west was a stark contrast to relaxing on the beach in the s...
YASSOU! GALLIPOLI to GREECE 🇬🇷 - Australia to Scotland by road - Episode 91

Our first stop on Gallipoli was a tour of the memorials. The lower end of the peninsula is now a National Park dedicated to the battles which took place here in 1915, known as the Gallipoli Campaign to the Allies or the Battle of Cannakkale to the Turks. Driving around the peninsula, aside from the many memorials, remnants of the war whether crumbling bunkers, cemeteries, heavy artillery, barbe...

The howling onshore was no more and the sea lie flat in the dawn light. As the moon sets and the sun rises the water returns to the crystal clear blue colour of days prior. After a quick breakie we break out our dive gear again and scrabble down the rocky outcrop to the waters edge. The sedimentary rock which makes up the steep bay walls is at mercy to the off season waves and in on place had c...
A PRIVATE BEACH CAMP in TÜRKIYE! 🇹🇷 - Australia to Scotland by road - Episode 89

The google search time paid off and this secluded hideaway turned out to be a real gem. During the day tour boats would flock in though come afternoon they would begin their migration home and we would be left alone, in peaceful isolation, with no reception, feeling a world away from everything and everyone. We had set up camp under a big shading tree right on the edge of the sand. As night fel...

The lay-day plan for better weather paid off and the following morning the skies were clear without a breath of wind and packed with balloons. Even before making our way out of the Troopy and well before daylight we could hear it was going to be a good day by the unmistakable roar of balloon burners. The balloon rides started in the region as an alternate perspective of the incredible landscape...

From our spring fed water stop in the previous episode we continued on until near dark and found a quiet spot for the night away from the road. With darkness now all but fallen the only signs of life were the small scattered village lights across the neighbouring mountain faces and the unmissable and echoing ‘adhan’ (call to prayer). We woke the following morning to an incredible mountain-scape...

The beautiful inviting emerald green river we were camped by didn’t make it through the night; washed away by the overnight rain and replaced with dirty muddy brown rapids. Our plans to enjoy the morning in the hot spring and river were dashed. Thankfully we had made the most of the clear starry night before the rain and laid in the hot, some very hot, pools in the dark under a stars. With now ...

Hey Guys - Another Perthie here. I had been planning a similar retirement trip for years as my dream trip, to load up a 76 or 79 series and pretty much do the same thing, except starting in Singapore and ending in London (via Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia Laos, Vietnam, China, Kazakhstan, Russia and into Europe from there..). I accidentally stumbled across your channel about a month ago and have been chugging through each episode up to this one. Sitting down and going over the costs/budget etc is exactly what I wanted to see! This is fantastic, thank you for all the information - I've been researching this route for a couple of years now and was concerned about different countries accepting the Carnet De Passage (particularly China) who I'd contacted and told me it was only valid for 30 days or so.. Problem I've had is much of the research I've tried to do has hit brick walls (i.e Russian Transport Ministry) and so forth. This has been a wave of great info so far.. Would love to see you actually update your website though with all this info one day as its excellent!
